In the supply chain sector, negotiation and communication skills in general, are incredibly beneficial to those in that field. Without a decent sense of communicative ability, they would not be able to perform as well as they could if they had well rounded communication skills.
In order to negotiate successfully, active listening is essential. Supply Chain Managers need to be able to listen to the buyers request, and determine if this deal is going to ameliorate the companies revenue and inventory.
Hypothetically, if a Company B (the buyer) goes to Company S (supplier), Company B will provide the details on how much product they require. This will allow Company S to offer them a deal. This deal will consist of a price, and time needed for this product to be produced and shipped. Company B now has the opportunity to refuse, accept, or offer an alteration to Company S' proposal. In response, Company S will tell their buyer their absolute minimum price, after which a transaction between these two companies may, or may not occur.
